Member Spotlight - Taylor
By day, Taylor is a video producer but by night, he spends time as a Steward at The Cave. Read about how the maker community has inspired and energized Taylor.
Why did you become a Steward?
I decided to become a Steward because I wanted to be a part of this maker community. Having access to a reliable space and tools to work with is fantastic, but the community was the real selling point.
What is your favorite part of being a Steward?
The community hands down. I’ve never experienced a group that is this generous with their time and creativity to other makers. It’s inspiring and energizing to be apart of this community!
What skills are you hoping to improve on while being a Steward?
I would love to explore machining techniques, such as the mill or metal lathe. Beyond that, I hope to keep improving my forging skills and to continue to develop the forging program at the cave. But the sky’s the limit. I love learning, so I am continually looking for new skills to pick up at the cave.
What is your favorite project you witnessed while spending time at DIYcave?
Probably the fire pit for Winterfest. It was a real group effort from the cave community. It brought together the expertise of some of the makers that inspire me. It ended up being a beautiful piece and a tribute to the skills and creativity of the Cave community.
What advice would you give someone who wants to join DIYcave and start a project?
The collective experience and expertise of the cave community are rare and extremely valuable. Use it! Meet other members and Stewards, talk to them, learn about their projects! Ask for help; ask for advice. I guarantee you and your project(s) will be better for it! And of course, remember to have fun! We’re all here because we are passionate about making. Never forget the joy that sparks in your heart.
