Meet Steward of the Month, Trevor G. Find out why he loves talking about The Cave and his advice for coming in with a project.

Why did you become a Steward?
I became a steward for a couple of reasons. First, I love the atmosphere and mindset of the DIYcave. Everyone is interested in making incredible creations, and everyone seems willing to ask questions or offer help. I want to be a part of that kind of culture and be able to foster that creative drive in others that happen to stumble across this wonderful place. On top of that, I want to grow as a maker and a creative mind, and I can think of no better way to do that than volunteering in a space that makes that concept the cornerstone of its operation.

What is your favorite part of being a Steward?
I’ve only just started, so I’m still figuring this out. However, I will say I take immense joy in chatting with people who walk in for the first time and have no idea what they’ve just stepped into. The looks of curiosity and awe that follow as I explain what DIYcave is about never ceased to make me smile.

What skills are you hoping to improve on while being a Steward?
I’m hoping to expand my skillsets, especially around woodworking, and to foster more of a maker mindset. I’ve already witnessed several instances of people using tools and materials in ways I would have never even considered as a possibility, and I look forward to learning more about how to think outside the box.

What is your favorite project you witnessed while spending time at DIYcave?
I would have to say watching one member working on cabinetry for his van. I love the idea of building a tiny house someday and just seeing that kind of project being done at the shop was inspiring.

What advice would you give someone who wants to join DIYcave and start a project?
All I can say is the best way to get started is to jump in and do it. Take the classes you need to get familiar with tools you want to use, and never be afraid to ask questions!
