Looking for a Father’s Day experience that goes beyond another tie or gadget? Spend time in the metal shop and make something together. This hands-on class is perfect for beginners—or anyone who wants a solid refresher in metal cutting and welding—and makes a great shared experience for dads, kids, partners, or anyone celebrating a hands-on kind of dad.

We’ll start with shop safety and a quick overview of the tools, then jump right in. Students will cut steel using a plasma cutter, prep and fit their pieces, and weld them back together using a MIG welder. With plenty of guided practice time, you’ll build confidence with the equipment and see how heat, angle, and movement affect your welds.

Whether you’re working side-by-side or cheering each other on, this class is all about learning new skills, making memories, and leaving with something you built yourself.

What you’ll learn:

• Basic shop safety and proper use of welding PPE

• How to safely operate a plasma cutter to cut steel

• How to prep, fit, and tack steel pieces before welding

• Fundamentals of MIG welding, including settings, angles, and technique

• How heat and movement affect weld strength and appearance

• Tips for troubleshooting common beginner welding issues

By the end of class, you’ll have a better feel for working with steel, a solid understanding of welding fundamentals, and a finished practice piece to take home. No prior welding experience is required—just curiosity, a willingness to try something new, and maybe a dad who’s up for sparks and steel. 🔥

What to Wear

Please wear close-toed shoes, no loose clothing, and hair tied back for safety in the studio.​

What to Bring

If you have personal protective equipment, please bring it with you. Otherwise, protective gear will be provided as needed.

Prerequisites

No Experience Required.

Ages 13+ welcome if accompanied by a parent/guardian. Both need to register and pay.

Cancellation Policy

Refunds, Credits & Transfers

We understand that emergencies happen, so if you are unable to attend your class and you cancel with:

• More than 14 (fourteen) days notice before your class, you may request a full refund or transfer the full amount paid to another class.

• Less than 14 (fourteen) days notice before your class, your payment is non refundable. However you may transfer the amount paid, minus a 15% cancellation fee, to any class within 90 days of request. It is not guaranteed that a comparable class will be offered within 90 days.

• Less than 48 (forty eight) hours before your class begins, your payment is non refundable. It is extremely difficult to fill cancelled spaces with short notice.

• After class start date/time: No credits, refunds or prorating of fees will be given for missed portions or early withdrawals.

DIYcave reserves the right to cancel any class, limit class size, change class times or substitute instructors for those listed in the schedule. If a class is canceled, students may choose to receive a full refund or may transfer – with no fee – to another class or workshop. If DIYcave cancels for any reason, all payments can be refunded.
