About This Class:

Turning “green” wood (wood of a high moisture content) is a fun and valuable skill to develop as you gain mastering in lathe work. Once you know where to look, green wood suitable for turning is relatively easy to find and and opens up a larger inventory of wood to choose from. Green wood is also much easier turn than dry wood; however, green wood can warp significantly and addressing this requires skills not needed when turning dry wood.
In this two part class you will learn the twice-turning technique of turning green wood. On the first day we will
Discuss various ways to source green wood
Explain how to process green wood and rough rounds into bowl blanks
Take a green turning blank and “first-turn” it into a rough shape
Prep your first-turned bowl for drying
On the second day you will be given a dried (and warped) first turned rough bowl and shape it into a final display piece. This involves
Mounting the warped bowl
Turning it round and making final shape
Learning techniques that can be used if cracks appear.
