From Passion Project to Business: Backcountry Banjos

One of the best parts of being a makerspace is getting to watch an idea grow into something real.

For Marie and Judd, that idea became Backcountry Banjos—a business creating beautiful handmade banjos from the ground up.

It didn't happen overnight. Like so many maker journeys, it started with curiosity, a willingness to learn, and countless hours in the shop.

Using DIYcave's woodworking equipment, CNC router, sanding and finishing tools, and the guidance of experienced makers, Judd refined his designs one piece at a time. Every neck, every body, every detail represented another lesson learned and another step toward turning a passion into a business.

Along the way, he found something just as valuable as tools.

"It's been such a journey to start this business, and it wouldn't have been possible without the mentorship from all the talented Cavers."

That spirit of mentorship is what makes DIYcave special. Whether you're building furniture, learning to weld, creating art, or crafting musical instruments, there's always someone willing to share their knowledge and help you solve the next challenge.

And if you've ever been in the shop while Judd was testing one of his latest creations, you know his music has become part of the soundtrack of DIYcave. Hearing a new banjo come to life has been a joy for all of us.

Seeing Marie and Judd transform a personal passion into a real business is exactly why DIYcave exists. We love watching members gain confidence, develop new skills, and eventually create something they never imagined possible.

Congratulations to both of you on this exciting new chapter. We can't wait to see where Backcountry Banjos goes next.
