Forging Steel into Something Real - Knifeblades!
DIYcave’s Blacksmith Knife Blade with Wood Handle class takes students through the full process of turning raw steel into a finished custom knife. Over three days, students heat, hammer, shape, grind, and refine their own blade and wood handle while learning the fundamentals of blacksmithing and knife making.
The photos capture the full life cycle of the project — from choosing handle wood and heating steel at the forge to shaping the rough knife blank and refining it into a finished blade. Early in the process, the knife is little more than a heated block of steel. Once the blade has transformed into a clean, polished tool it is ready for a custom handle.
One of the standout details in this build was the Zebrawood handle, whose bold striped grain gave the finished knife a striking natural look. Once the handle scales were pinned and shaped onto the blade, the project truly came together as a functional handmade piece.
Instructors Jeremy and Jim created a welcoming and approachable environment throughout the class. Their guidance helped students feel comfortable working with hot steel and power tools while still giving everyone the opportunity to do the work themselves and experience the satisfaction of building something by hand.
For anyone curious about blacksmithing, this class offers an incredible introduction to the craft — and students leave with more than just a knife. They leave with a deeper appreciation for the process, the materials, and the skill behind handmade tools.
