Monthly member events are back in action and with strong attendance it seems like they are a hit!! With the goal of showcasing different areas of the cave, showing members what tools we have available, giving some instruction on how to use them properly, inspiring them to make something creative and giving members a chance to meet and mingle; member events are a way to bring members together who have a shared love of making. With so many new and longtime loyal members we wanted to give back to the folks that make the DIYcave a growing and supportive community with these free events. Our charismatic welding instructor Jim Currie gave us a tour of the most commonly used tools in the metal shop to remove the mysticism and fear of the metal shop and give members an introduction to how these tools work and what they are used for.
Jim (also referred to as Currie) has been involved with the cave since its humble beginnings as an instructor and member. He is a keystone here at the cave and we are so grateful to have him as he is extremely knowledgeable and a great teacher. Jim demonstrated tools that included the MIG welder, plasma cutter, oxy acetylene torch, metal vertical and horizontal bandsaw, drill press, grinders, ring roller, and more. Other tools in the metal shop include our TIG welder, powder coater and oven, Auto Lift, ski wax station with irons and tools for your skis and snowboards, various drill bits, hand tools, hardware, and plenty of odds and ends. Stewards on duty can assist members in using most all of these tools safely and properly while using the shop; however, to use the welders, plasma cutter, or torch you must get certified though a welding class here at the cave or show us that you know how to use it beforehand.
Upcoming welding classes include Intro to Welding, A Women's Only Intro to Welding taught by our female welding instructor Rosie, A 4-week Weld Your Own Project Course, where Jim helps you to design and weld one or multiple metal projects of your choosing, and the very popular Date Night Welding where you and a partner or friend weld something together. If you are looking for a beginner metal project to try on your own, we have our Build Your Own Firepit kits available for sale in our retail area and online. Welding is an extremely practical and useful skill that anyone can easily learn and practice here at the DIYcave.
