Reminiscing on Downtown Fall Festival

Oct 8, 2024

Each Autum the DIY Cave celebrates with an amazing community of art lovers and festival goers at one of Downtown Bend's largest events of the year! For the cave this year's Bend Fall Festival brought live demonstrations, new members, a silent auction to raise money for our scholarship fund, fresh pressed apple juice, and more stoke for your community maker space.

This year's live demonstrations featured many of our brilliant teachers including Seatonn, who demonstrated spindle turning on the lathe. Mak who showed the wild possibilities of leather tooling. Angie and Linnea showing us how stain glass is done in record time. Tim very accurately used an oxy acetylene torch to cut out sheet metal art and give onlookers a change to participate themselves. Our long-time blacksmiths Jim and Jeremy showed off years of dedication to their craft by making two beautifully handcrafted knives. Plus, Aaron was having fun printing windmill tulips for the kids while Lisa was demonstrating how to be a bird whisperer.

It wouldn't quite feel like Fall if we didn't roll out our apple press to hand out some fresh pressed apple juice with all the kids wanting to help take a turn to squeeze out the juice and wishing they could drink directly from the waterfall of juice pouring from the press.

With many sporting temporary DIY Cave tattoos we so happily welcomed over 100 new members over the weekend who were inspired to join the DIY Cave to utilize our tools and space to begin or continue on their maker journey! We are so ecstatic to expand our community and can't wait to see what they make.

This was the beginning of what we hope to be an annual silent auction with the idea of having live auctions throughout the year to support our scholarship fund. That money goes to lower the cost for kids that are affiliated with our Big Brothers Big Sisters partnership where Bigs can take classes with their littles at a discounted rate. The scholarship fund is also intended for families that want to sign their kids up for classes but may not have the means to do so in an effort to educate more kids on things like tech, CNC machines, 3D printing, digital design, welding, woodworking, sheet metal art and more, in a hands-on immersive experience here at the DIY cave.

Thanks for everyone that joined us at this year's Fall Fest and helped to make it another successful year!

We can't wait to see you again next year! Love your DIY Cave crew!
