Monthly member events are back in action and with strong attendance it seems like they are a hit!! With the goal of showcasing different areas of the cave, showing members what tools we have available, giving some instruction on how to use them properly, inspiring them to make something creative and giving members a chance to meet and mingle; member events are a way to bring members together who have a shared love of making. With so many new and longtime loyal members we wanted to give back to the folks that make the DIYcave a growing and supportive community with these free events. Our extremely talented lathe instructor Seatonn kicked it off on the wood lathe for us with a live demonstration of how to use various tools to make a variety of projects.
He demonstrated how to make a bottle opener that could easily be made shorter and with different hardware become a bottle stopper. This hardware is available to purchase at the cave for you to make your own. Other gift ideas on the lathe include pens, dart sets, key chains, all of which we have hardware for sale in our retail area with instruction sheets. Plus, consider customizing your creation after it's done by laser engraving a personal message on our Glowforge.
Then in time for the holiday season he demonstrated how to make a snowman and a Christmas tree both of which can be used as decor on a table or turned into an ornament for a tree or window. Using birch trunks Seatonn showed how you can make a tree with its own stand at varying heights for a classic aesthetic.
Upcoming lathe classes include Into to Wood Lathe Turning, Introduction to Bowls, Intermediate Bowl Techniques, Learning to Create Fine Details, and Lathe Tool Sharpening Workshop. Once you've learned how to make bowls you can expand this technique to make chalices...then all you'll need is to carve your own spoon and have a matching set! Below are some examples of Seatonn's bowls, the first photo is a common bowl made in the intermediate bowl class and the live edge bowl below is what you can look forward to mastering after much time practicing on the lathe.
Thanks to all who attended our maker event! If you have ideas you'd like to see at our next maker event send your suggestion to info@diycave.com we'd love to hear from you! Happy Making!
