Turning Wood Into Memories with his Grandson
This was one of those really good shop days.
John and his 16-year-old grandson Elliot took a private lathe lesson here at DIYcave, where they spent the day learning how to turn wooden bowls from scratch.
There’s something pretty special about watching multiple generations standing shoulder-to-shoulder at a lathe — learning together, coaching each other, making sawdust, and slowly watching a spinning block of wood transform into something beautiful.
With guidance from our lathe instructor Seatonn, the group learned the fundamentals of bowl turning, tool control, shaping techniques, and sanding. And the bowls turned out awesome!
But even better than the finished projects was the energy in the shop. Lots of encouragement, lots of laughing, and a whole lot of “wait… I actually made this?!” moments.
Huge thanks to Seatonn for being such a patient and encouraging coach, and to John for continuing to share his knowledge with the next generation of makers.
This is the kind of stuff we love seeing at DIYcave.
Think it, Make It!
